Skin laxity is the progressive loss of firmness, density and tone of the tissues. It can be cutaneous (when the skin loses collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, becoming thinner and looser) and/or muscular (when the tone and strength of the muscle that supports the skin decrease). Although it is a natural part of ageing, it can appear prematurely due to various factors and affect people of any body type.
• Skin ageing: decline in collagen and elastin, reduced fibroblast activity and dehydration of the dermal matrix.
• Hormonal changes: stages such as menopause or thyroid disorders accelerate the loss of tissue support.
• Rapid weight loss or sudden volume changes (postpartum, strict diets), which “deflate” the tissue without giving the skin time to adapt.
• Sedentary lifestyle and low muscle mass: less mechanical stimulus → less tone and poorer skin support.
• Photoageing (sun/UV): degrades elastic fibres and collagen; promotes laxity, especially on the face, neck and décolleté.
• Habits and lifestyle: smoking, chronic stress, lack of sleep, a diet low in proteins and micronutrients, and insufficient hydration.
• Genetic factors and baseline skin quality.
Skin laxity is easily recognised when you notice thinner, less elastic skin, a “sagging effect”, fine lines and loss of contour. When there is a muscular component, it presents as a “lack of support” and reduced tone to the touch. The most common areas where it appears are:
• Cutaneous laxity: face (facial oval, jowls), neck, décolleté, arms (inner area), abdomen, inner thighs and buttocks.
• Muscular laxity: abdomen, buttocks, thighs and arms, especially after periods of inactivity or weight loss.
At Clínica Áureo, we offer a variety of effective treatments to tackle muscular and cutaneous laxity, improving skin firmness and appearance. Below are our main options:
Body mesotherapy consists of intradermal injections of substances with lipolytic, antifibrotic and tightening properties, such as organic silicon or hyaluronic acid. These microinjections, performed at a depth of approximately 4 millimetres, create micro-injuries that, as they heal, result in smoother, firmer skin. Read more
Carboxytherapy involves the subcutaneous injection of carbon dioxide (CO₂), which increases vascularisation and stimulates collagen production. This process produces a tightening effect on the skin, reducing lack of firmness and improving both cutaneous and muscular laxity. Read more
Is an advanced, non-invasive treatment that combines acoustic shock waves with radiofrequency to combat laxity and improve skin firmness. This innovative technology acts on the main causes of skin laxity, delivering visible improvements in skin texture without surgery or downtime.
In addition to medical-aesthetic treatments, maintaining a strength-training routine is essential to tone the muscles, improve the structure of the skin tissue and prevent laxity. The most commonly affected areas include the arms, inner thighs, knees, abdomen and buttocks. Read more
