What is localised fat and why does it appear?

Localised fat is the persistent accumulation of adipose tissue in specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, buttocks, hips, arms, or under the chin. Unlike generalised overweight, this type of fat is not always related to excess weight and can appear even in slim individuals with a healthy body mass index.

Its origin is multifactorial and is usually influenced by:

Genetic factors: Some people tend to accumulate fat in specific areas due to family inheritance.

Hormonal changes: Stages such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause or the use of contraceptives can encourage localised fat accumulation.

Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity slows down metabolism and fat burning.

Unbalanced diet: A diet high in saturated fats, sugars and ultra-processed foods contributes to its development.

Chronic stress and lack of sleep: Both factors alter hormonal balance and promote fat storage, especially in the abdominal area.

One of the main characteristics of localised fat is its resistance to conventional weight loss methods, such as diet and physical exercise. Although these habits are essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, they often fail to completely eliminate these specific fat deposits, causing frustration and aesthetic concern.

Effective treatments for localised fat

At Clínica Áureo we offer various advanced, safe and personalised medical-aesthetic treatments which, individually or combined, act directly on these stubborn areas, helping to sculpt your silhouette, improve body proportions, and restore your wellbeing and confidence:

1. Intralipotherapy

Intralipotherapy is a non-surgical technique that involves the infiltration of a biocompatible, fully reabsorbable microgel solution directly into the fatty tissue. This solution causes the breakdown of fat cells thanks to its lipolytic effect, facilitating their natural elimination by the body. It is an alternative to liposuction, ideal for areas with a minimum fat thickness of 1.5–2 centimetres. After the procedure, the use of compression garments is recommended for 3–7 days. The number of sessions varies per patient, but generally between 3 and 4 sessions are required, spaced 4 weeks apart. Read more

2. Body Mesotherapy

Body mesotherapy involves the intradermal injection of substances with lipolytic and antifibrotic properties into areas with localised fat. These microinjections, applied at a depth of approximately 4 millimetres, deposit minimal doses of product that act directly on the fat deposits. In addition to its pharmacological action, the procedure stimulates circulation and improves skin quality. It is an effective option to reduce small fat accumulations and improve skin texture. Read more

3. Carboxytherapy

Carboxytherapy involves the subcutaneous injection of carbon dioxide (CO₂), which increases vascularisation and stimulates local metabolism. This process helps to break down fat cells and improves skin elasticity, making it effective for treating localised fat, cellulite and skin laxity. It also enhances circulation and promotes collagen regeneration, giving the skin a firmer and more toned appearance. Read more

LPG Endermologie

4. LPG® Endermologie

Endermologie or LPG® is a non-invasive mechanical massage technique that uses a device with motorised rollers to mobilise subcutaneous tissue. This treatment stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, encourages the elimination of toxins and improves skin texture. It is especially useful for reducing localised fat and cellulite, resulting in a slimmer silhouette and smoother skin. Read more
