Breast augmentation, or MAMOPLASTY, is a surgical procedure that serves to increase breast size, enhancing and/or rejuvenating their appearance, and making them equal by placing mammary prostheses to eliminate any asymmetries.
The procedure is most often performed on women with small or hypoplastic breasts, but can also be used to treat women who show visible differences between one breast and another, who have lost volume or shape as a result of the passage of time, or who have some breast defect owing to genetic causes (such as tuberose deformity) or to an acquired deformity (such as one resulting from a mastectomy).
The implants are surgically placed according to the assessment made and resulting technique that the surgeon decides is best, with the possible routes of entry being the areola, the armpits, or the inframammary ligament.
After the procedure, a small scar is left which can disappear with the passage of time.
An effort is made to place the implant behind the muscle whenever possible, so as not to affect the mammary glands or interfere with breastfeeding.In addition, if this route is used, it is more natural, the result reduces the risk of encapsulation, and the weight of the prosthesis produces no effect on the skin.
A breast augmentation procedure lasts about one or two hours. The anesthesia used can be local or general, while postoperative hospitalization lasts one day.
After surgery, the breast begins to look more natural after a week, and the sutures are removed after ten days. The healing process lasts between three and six months, depending on each case and each patient. The final result can be seen after six months have passed.
After the procedure, you should use a special bra to provide breast supportfor approximately one month. If surgical drains are placed, they are checked at the 48-hour mark to see if they may be removed, but the treatment may take up to 5 days.
A return to normal activities will be possible after a few days following the procedure, while a return to the workplace will depend on the type of activity engaged in by each patient.
The breast implants currently in use do not need to be replaced over the years if there are no complications, so that they should only be changed in case of breakage, displacement or deformity, leakage of their contents, or excessive wear.
